A Primer on Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) for Behavioral Scientists - Practical Assessment, Research & Evaluation

چکیده

Reviews of statistical procedures (e.g., Bangert & Baumberger, 2005; Kieffer, Reese, & Thompson, 2001; Warne, Lazo, Ramos, & Ritter, 2012) show that one of the most common multivariate statistical methods in psychological research is multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). However, MANOVA and its associated procedures are often not properly understood, as demonstrated by the fact that few of the MANOVAs published in the scientific literature were accompanied by the correct post hoc procedure, descriptive discriminant analysis (DDA). The purpose of this article is to explain the theory behind and meaning of MANOVA and DDA. I also provide an example of a simple MANOVA with real mental health data from 4,384 adolescents to show how to interpret MANOVA results.

Multivariate Analysis Versus Multiple Univariate Analyses

The argument for preceding multiple analysis of variance (ANOVAS) with a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to control for Type I error is challenged. Several situations are discussed in which multiple ANOVAS might be conducted without the necessity of a preliminary MANOVA. Three reasons for considering a multivariate analysis are discussed: to identify outcome variable system construct...

MANOVA method for analyzing repeated measures designs: an extensive primer.

This article teaches the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) method for repeated measures analysis to researchers who are already familiar with regular analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods. Repeated measures designs are traditionally analyzed with mixed-model ANOVAS. However, sphericity violations markedly affect the true Type I error rates and power for the mixed-model tests. However, t...

The Comparison of Emotional-Behavioral Disorders, Self-Concept and Academic Achievement in Children of Substance-Dependent and Non-Dependent Parents

Objective: The present study was conducted to compare emotional-behavioral disorders, self-concept and academic achievement between children with substance-dependent and non-dependent parents. Method: This study was a causal-comparative design. The statistical population included all male students of public high schools (first and second periods) in the west of Tehran in 2018-2019. Among them, ...

Multivariate Analysis of Variance

We provide an expository presentation of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) for both consumers of research and investigators by capitalizing on its relation to univariate analysis of variance models. We address several questions: (a) Why should one use MANOVA. 9 (b) What is the structure of MANOVA? (C) How are MANOVA test statistics obtained and interpreted? (d) How are MANOVA follow-up...

Multivariate methods in rehabilitation.

The complexity of relationships between variables in a variety of rehabilitation settings can be appropriately addressed by the use of multivariate methods of statistical analysis. The purpose of this article is to describe (a) some basic concepts and principles of multivariate methods as well as (b) common misconceptions in the application of such methods. Specifically, the authors focus on th...
